Off-leash dog park
ready to reopen

Campbell dogs will soon have a place to play again, when the Los Gatos Creek Dog Park reopens on April 1. The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department closed the park on Jan. 16--about a month after it had first opened--because rainy weather and heavy use turned the park's grassy fields into mud pits.

The 1-acre park at 1250 Dell Ave. had been scheduled to reopen March 14, but continuing rains pushed back the date.

The park has been renovated with a new "all-weather" decomposed granite track area, as well as with new grass. The new grass, however, will be fenced off until May 1 to allow for its rooting system to fully mature.

The dog park, which opened on Dec. 4, is divided into a small-dog and large-dog park. The area features logs for dogs to jump over, benches, trashcans, "pooper scooper" stations and water fountains for dogs and people.

Campbell built the park, but it's operated and maintained by the county. It sits adjacent to San Tomas Expressway, just north of the fly-casting ponds off Dell Avenue. It can also be accessed from the trail off Campbell Park.

The off-leash dog park cost $325,000 to construct. The majority of funds were applied toward the grading of the land and installation of the irrigation system.

Creek Trail bridge
repairs are done

The new pedestrian bridge on the Los Gatos Creek Trail, north of Campbell Avenue by the cul-de-sac at Camden Avenue, opened on March 14. The bridge was first set in place on Jan. 14, but upon inspection, the city decided the bridge was not ready to be opened, project manager Fred Ho said.

"There were some wood planks we were not happy with," he said, "and some of the bolts needed to be reworked, so we thought it'd be best to keep it closed until that was resolved."

Replacing the planks took a few weeks since they had to be shipped from Alabama, where the manufacturer of the bridge is located. Recent high winds also made it difficult to put the planks in place any sooner, Ho said.
